Canada - Routing Number

A Routing Number is code assigned to identity Financial Institution, Bank Branch, Credit Unions and Trust Companies. Account Number and Routing Number together used for Electronic Fund Transactions (EFT) within Canada.



There are two formats of Routing Numbers in Canada.

EFT Routing Number

Electronic Fund Transactions (EFT) Routing Number is used for electronic transactions like direct deposits and wire transfers. Electronic Fund Transactions (EFT) Routing Number contains 3-digits Financial Institution Number and 5-digit Branch Number. Last 5-digits are used to identify the Branch. And 3-digits before the Branch Number are used to identify Financial Institution.

  • 0 : Leading Zeros
As a rule
  • For Banks, Institution Numbers start with 0, 2, 3, or 6
  • For Credit Union & Caisse Populaire, Institution Numbers start with 8
  • For Trust Company, Institution Number start with 5

Transit Number (MICR Number)

Transit Number is also known as MICR Number (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition).
MICR Number is written on the bottom of checks identifying Financial Institution.
